Name of Activity: Badminton Partner Singles

Purpose of Activity: To allow time for badminton singles play when space is limited and to keep everyone actively engaged in the game during play.

Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of serving and clears, Can keep a rally going, Beginner's strategy, Basic rules

Suggested Grade Level: 9-12

Materials Needed: Badminton courts with nets, Badminton rackets, shuttlecocks.

Description of Idea

1. Assign 4 students per court.
2. 2 students are partners throughout the play, but only 1 person plays from the team at a time.
3. Singles are played for an allotted time, while the other partner observes, coaches, scouts, referees and/or assesses from the side. 4. At the end of play time, the observer provides feedback to their partner.
5. The second partner enters the game and continues where the game left off. When the new exchange begins, the score remains and the second partner adds to it during his/her time in play.

Variations:

Play a Round Robin with the 4 players in your group. Keep track of scores on pre-designed score sheets.

Groups of 8 students per court; 4 students play doubles for allotted time and switch places with the observation team, who then continues to assess, score etc. from the sidelines.

Assessment Ideas:

Questions to consider while watching:

Is coaching evident? Do they call the score at the beginning of each exchange? Are they recording assessments on pre-designed score sheets during play? Do they give corrective feedback to their partner after the time is up? If the partner plays again, are they using the feedback given to improve their play?

Teaching Suggestions:

Slower or bigger shuttle, larger racket. A slow moving nerf ball can be used and hit off the floor and in the air.
