Academic content: Language Arts/Spelling Purpose of Activity: To encourage cooperation and proper spelling and body depiction of two-letter words. Prerequisites: Students have participated in small group activities and the concept of cooperation has been discussed and practiced. Students have worked on forming their bodies into different shapes, numbers and letters. Suggested Grade Level: K-2 Materials Needed: lines on the gym floor, paper and pencil for each group Physical activity: Non-locomotor Description of Idea Before playing the game discuss the word cooperation and how important it is to work together to complete the activity. The class is divided into groups of 3 students and each group finds their personal space near a line on the gym floor. Give each group paper and a pencil and have the students write down five two-letter words. Using their bodies students are to begin to form the letters to spell each of their five words. They must spell the word correctly and the teacher must be able to be read the word from left to right on their "baseline." The teacher will move randomly around the room to read the words. After all five words have been spelled, students need to think of 3 letter words to spell. Each group tries to see how many words they can spell before the class is over. Have students spell the words with the entire body, the upper body only, the lower body only, the left side of the body, and the right side of the body. Change the students' position from low to medium to high level. This activity can be included with lessons on moving in different ranges and changing shapes. Assessment Ideas: As the teacher, if you can read the word the group spells on their line, they have worked together well and have spelled the word correctly. The group that cooperates the best usually is able to spell more words than the other groups. Teaching Suggestions: Be very watchful for children reversing letters like b, d, q, and p. If they are making the letters in the wrong direction, then this activity will only reinforce this habit!!! Adaptations for Students with Disabilities: Students with disabilities can still use their bodies (or wheelchair) to help form the letters of the words. If unable to do this, he or she can be the one to decide on the next word and help the group get organized to spell that word. |
