Name of Activity: Dice and Cones

Purpose of Activity: To practice locomotor movements in general space.

Prerequisites: Prior learning of locomotor movements.

Suggested Grade Level: K-2

Materials Needed: 15-20 orange traffic cones; pair of large dice.

Description of Idea

Have students place a traffic cone upright on the floor around the general space. Prompt them to keep cones away from wall and center (meeting circle) area. To begin the activity, have students sit in a circle at the center area. Ask students to name the different locomotor ways they can move (walk, jog/run, hop, skip, slide, etc.). Explain that you will be rolling the die you have in your hand. They will all call out the number together, then they can go and perform the locomotor movement that you call out to that number of cones. They should touch the top of each cone they come to; when they are done, they then perform the locomotor movement back to the center circle. Have a few students demonstrate this so all can see. If there are no questions, have students stand up and get ready to move! Change the locomotor movement you call out. You can also have students roll the die.

Assessment Ideas:

Have a student expain and demonstrate a locomotor skill before the whole class performs the movement. Visually assess the students to see if they can correctly perform the locomotor movement called out.

Adaptations for Students with Disabilities:

Have students move in a way they find easiest to that number of cones.
