Name of Activity: Scooter Boats

Purpose of Activity: To improve students' arm muscular strength by using pushing and pulling actions.

Prerequisites: Ability to work well together.

Suggested Grade Level: 2-3

Materials Needed: One folding-up panelled gymnastics mat and 2 or 3 scooters for each group.

Description of Idea

Allow students to choose partners or small groups of three. Explain and demonstrate the activity as follows:

Students place the folded-up mat on top of the evenly-spaced scooters. They decide who will ride first and who will push/pull first. The "rider" lies on their back on the mat; the other student(s) pushes and/or pulls them around the playing area.

Discuss safety aspects before allowing students to play: no crashes into other "boats" or the walls are allowed.

Allow students to assemble their "boats" and begin play. Students can either change riders when they are ready to, or at your signal.

When done, ask students which muscles were working hardest in this activity. What component of fitness was the activity helping them to increase?

Teaching Suggestions:

The concept of cooperation and trust can also be discussed in this activity.

Adaptations for Students with Disabilities:

This activity was designed by students in an adapted P.E. class.

We did something like this but used it as a cooperative activity where those riding gave directions and cones were placed around the gym. Those pushing couldn't run into the cones (or another ship) or they lost a scooter. We had those in wheel chairs helping to push from the end of the mats.

How does this help the other students who are riding? It doesn't say what the specifics of the "adapted" class are. I like the idea of DL's use of the polo sticks but that would seem to take away from any need for the push/pull aspect---maybe not---will have to give it a try.

Awesome lesson. I used it today with my 4th graders. "White water rafting". I had them design their own boats using whatever material was present. I had them use pillow polo sticks as their paddles to get down the river. I used bike helmets to incorporate safety and other materials. They had a blast, some got going pretty fast and others it took a while, but they were laughing and smiling. Thanks a lot :-)
