Suggested Grade Level: 1-2 Materials Needed: 3-5 yarn balls, 3-4 rubber chickens Description of Idea Tell the students they are going to play crazy chickens as their warm up for the day. The boundary lines represent the chicken coop. The yarn balls represent farms who are trying to round up their chickens by tagging other students softly with the yarn ball on their shirt. Yarn balls must stay in the hands of the taggers. If tagged by a farmer, the student must freeze, make their arms into wings (bend arms at the elbows and tuck into arm pits) and they must flap their wings and make chicken noises until a student with the rubber chicken frees them by handing them a chicken. The chicken will then be passed to another frozen chicken, which will allow that student re-entry into the activity. I always start will skipping as the locomotor movement and all of the children use the same locomotor movement. Rarely do I allow them to jog or run during the activity. Teaching Suggestions: Make sure you show the students a safe way to carry the rubber chicken while they are moving and make sure they do not throw the chicken at anyone. |
