Name of Activity: Standing Review - A Learning and Assessment Technique

Purpose of Activity: This is an effective way to review material that you have already taught in a new, fun and interesting way, instead of the typical lecture method.

Suggested Grade Level: 6-8

Materials Needed: You will need each student's name written on a small piece of paper and placed in a box or hat. You will also need to have questions dealing with the material you are reviewing.

Description of Idea

Follow these steps:

1. All students are standing
2. You ask a question related to the topic your are treating.
3. You give the students some time to come up with the answer. During this time, students can walk around the room and discuss with other students what they think about the question and the answer(s) to it.
4. Each student sits when he or she is confident that he or she has the correct answer.
5. When all of the students are seated, you pick a name out of the box or hat.
6. The student answers the question.
7. Discuss the answer if it is necessary.
8. All students stand up for another question.

Variations:

You can keep score to make it a little more interesting. You can make 2 columns on the board - one for correct and one for incorrect. Each time they get an answer correct, put a stroke/tic in the correct column. Each time they get one incorrect, put a stroke/tic in the incorrect column. At the end, you can figure out the % of correct answers. If you have more than one health class, you can have the classes compete against each other.

Assessment Ideas:

An assessment of this activity may not be necessary as the activity is primarily an assessment of learning. If you feel inclined, you might consider the following as an assessment:

Have the class discuss or write a paragraph on the following topics.

1. Explain the benefits of reviewing information in this fashion. Make sure their answers include something about using resources to improve your knowledge, communicating with others, working together for a common goal, etc.
2. Name some professions where it is common to work together to accomplish a goal.
3. Name some times you worked together with others to accomplish a goal.
4. What are some of the skills/techniques that are needed to work together with others on a team.

Include a discussion component to this assessment. Have the students do the writing part and then have a class discussion on what they wrote.
