Name of Activity: Risk Factor Charades

Purpose of Activity: To review personal safety concepts in a variety of areas common to the lives of students. To have students work cooperatively in a group.

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials Needed: 3 X 5 index cards, pencils, container.

Description of Idea

After reviewing personal safety rules, each student will come up with one example of a risk behavior that relates to a previously introduced safety rule. Have them write it on a 3 X 5 index card. The index cards are collected and placed in a container. Students are then divided into groups of 3-4.

To start the game one group comes up and selects a card. They then act out the risk behavior. The other groups then guess what the risk behavior is and it’s corresponding safety rule. Each group takes turns coming up and acting out a risk behavior.

If you would like to add some competition to the activity, include scoring. A group could score 1 point for correctly identifying the risk factor and safety rule. If a large space (multi-purpose room, gymnasium) is available each group can be paired with another group and several individual games can go on at one time.

At the conclusion of the activity, discuss with students the most difficult parts of the activity and review safety rules again.

Assessment Ideas:

Each group could write down the risk behavior and corresponding safety rule when guessing instead of answering verbally. Then take note of correct and incorrect responses.
