Name of Activity: Directions Boogie

Purpose of Activity: The purpose of this activity is to integrate the concept of directions with moving to a rhythm. It is a culminating activity for the "6 + 2" mnemonic device from On The Move by Shirley Ann Holt/Hale. The "6" directions taught--forward, backward, left, right, up, down, plus the "2" directions--clockwise and counterclockwise.

Prerequisites: Demonstrating the concept of forward, backward, left and right (sideways), up, down, and rotation (clockwise and counterclockwise). Lower grade levels can focus on sideways and rotation and upper grades can be held accountable for right and left, clockwise and counterclockwise.

Suggested Grade Level: K-2

Materials Needed: CD with a good beat. I use Walt Disney Records Mickey's Dance Party's Rapamagical. The beat is slow enough for the students to get some great movements going as they move in different directions.

Description of Idea

After students attempt, demonstrate, and explore the concept of directions I end the lesson with "The Directions Boogie." This is a dance that we create using the "6 + 2" mnemonic device for directions. Every direction is done to a count of 8. We move forward, backward, left, right, down, up, clockwise, and counterclockwise. I encourage students to put their own personality into the movements. We repeat the directions until the end of the song. I call out the directions and the count.

Assessment Ideas:

Watch to see if students are demonstrating the correct direction when called out by the teacher.

Adaptations for Students with Disabilities:

Students in wheelchairs can easily move in the direction of the dance. Students can use their arms or other body parts if not mobile. Teacher assistants can help students move in the direction of the dance and reinforce the concept while the student is participating.
