Name of Activity: Beanbag Tic Tac Toe

Purpose of Activity: To help the students practice the skills of over- and underhand throwing.

Activity cues:

  • Underhand: arm back ("tick"); step with the opposite foot; throw ("tock")

  • Overhand: side to target, step with opposition, arm back, follow through, eyes on target

Suggested Grade Level: K-2

Materials Needed: For a class of 40 students you will need: 180 bean-bags (90 with "X's" and 90 with "O's") and 20 4ft.x 4ft. poster boards marked with a 'Tic-Tac-Toe' grid.

Description of Idea

Have each student choose a partner and find a safe space on the floor. Give each group of partners a Tic-Tac-Toe grid and 18 bean-bags (9 "X's" and 9 "O's"). The students will then step 4-6 feet (2-3 giant steps) away from the poster board and practice throwing the bean-bags, either under-handed or over-handed, on the poster board. The object is to get 'Tic-Tac-Toe' while practicing the correct way to throw.

The number and which cues you use will depend upon students' prior
experience and success with these types of throws. For K-2, it is
recommended that one, no more than two, cues be stressed for a lesson, and that these cues are emphasized over a period of lessons.

Note: this is a great lesson to use for assessing students' abilities to throw using the proper cues. Their interest in the game keeps them motivated to keep throwing, giving you plenty of opportunities to observe them.
