Name of Activity: My Snake

Purpose of Activity: To help students learn about body awareness and letter recognition.

Suggested Grade Level: K-2

Materials Needed: The poem called "My Snake" from the book, Something Big Has Been Here by Jack Prelutsky, large flashcards of the snake making each letter of the alphabet.

Description of Idea

Have the children find good personal space in the classroom or gym and have them sit down.

"We are going to hear a story about a clever creature who can make every letter of the alphabet with his body. Do you think you could make every letter of the alphabet with your body? I am going to read the story about My Snake. Each time he makes a letter I want you to try and make the same letter as he does."

Throughout the entire poem, the snake is twisting and turning himself into letters. There are illustrations included in the poem that make a wonderful visual aid for the children. Many children may have fears of snakes so having a picture of a "friendly" snake can help ease some anxiety.
