Name of Activity: Forward Roll Partner Check Sheet (Gymnastics)

Purpose of Activity: To assess your partner on how they are performing the cues of the forward roll in gymnastics.

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Description of Idea

You can use this as a peer assessment tool when assessing any skill taught using teaching cues or sequencing. Or you can use it as a teacher assessment tool completed by you, the teacher.

This assessment also cuts across for almost all of the skills that one would find taught in elementary physical education classes. The forward roll is just an example.

When teaching the forward roll list your teaching cues such as:

______ remained in a tucked position.

______ kept their chin to their chest.

______ pushed evenly with both feet.

______ reached forward coming out of the roll.

______ landed on their feet.

The students partner would watch them perform the roll. The partner will then check off all parts of the skill that were performed correctly. If you would like to add a rubric to this we have a suggested one listed in the Variations section. This might be best used with a teacher assessing the students however.

Use the other PE Central Cues to develop other partner assessments like this one.

Variations:

You may want to change this so it includes a rubric. Let the students know that in order to receive a score of a 4 they need to perform all 5 parts of the forward roll using quality movements.

Possible Rubric:

Outstanding Level = Automatically performs cues on demand for this skill, is rythmical and automatic, can repeat over and over without mistakes

Good but not Quite Level = Can perform cues on demand but a little awkward, with a few minor mistakes.

Has some of it, but still needs practice Level = Can perform at own pace, mostly correct but can't come up to feet.

Eventually, but for now, needs lots of practice Level = Can not perform on demand, must take time to think and perform, stiff, not comfortable or automatic.
