Name of Activity: Single Lindy Mixer

Purpose of Activity: To learn and practice the Single Lindy dance steps with a variety of partners in a sociable and fun atmosphere.

Prerequisites: Be able to perform the basic step, collegiate turn, and underarm turn variations of the Single Lindy dance.(Written instructions for these steps are included in this lesson plan.) NOTE: It is easy to make a mixer by incorpoating a basic underarm turn as done in the Dingle Lindy Mixer. You can use this basic underarm turn to make your own mixers. Simply vary the dance routine or try other dances and variations. This is an easy and fun way to give students the opportunity to dance with other partners, yet challenging enough that they will feel a real sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Lots of smiles!

Suggested Grade Level: 9-12

Materials Needed: Tape, CD, or Record player

Recommended music: "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley and the Comets
"Splish Splash" by Bobby Darren

Beginning dance formation: Double Circle with partners facing (holding both hands)

Dance source: Single Lindy Mixer dance and dance instructions in this plan were written by Judy Black.

Description of Idea

Boy's Part (starting on left foot):

Two basic single Lindy steps (12 counts); two collegiate turns (12 counts); two single Lindy steps allowing the girl to do an underarm turn on the second single Lindy step (12 counts).

Girl's Part (starting on the right foot):

Two basic single Lindy steps (12 counts); two collegiate turns (12 counts); one basic single Lindy step (6 counts) followed by one basic underarm turn (6 counts) leading out to the right in the line of direction and ending with a new partner.

Note: The dance becomes a mixer by having the girl perform the "basic underarm turn to a new partner". (See the following descriptions).

DESCRIPTION OF DANCE STEPS:

Basic Single Lindy Step:

Instructions for boy's part (girl's part is reversed, beginning on right foot). Count 1 - step on left foot in place
Count 2 - pause (hold)
Count 3 - step on right foot in place
Count 4 - pause (hold)
Count 5 - rock back on left foot
Count 6 - step in place on right foot

Collegiate Turn:

Partners begin in facing position (holding hands).

Counts 1-2: The boy steps forward on his left foot and the girl steps forward on her right foot into right parallel position (right hip to right hip) with arms in a "semi-butterfly" position (boy's right arm and girl's left arm extended shoulder high with other arms slightly bent.
Counts 3-4: The boy brings his right foot up to meet his left foot while pivoting approximately 1/4 turn clockwise on his right foot. The girl brings her left foot up to meet her right foot while pivoting approximately 1/4 turn clockwise on her left foot. The arms bend and the couple is almost face to face.
Counts 5-6: The boy completes the half turn by rocking back on his left foot then forward on his right foot. the girl completes the half turn by rocking back on their right foot then forward on her left foot. The arms extend on the rock step and the couple is ready to go into the next step.

Note: At the completion of one collegiate turn the boy and girl will have completed a half turn (clockwise) and exchanged places.

Basic Underarm Turn to a new partner:

Boy's Part:

The boy will continue to do the basic step with the following exceptions:
Counts 1-2: release the girl's left hand and raise her right hand so she can begin the underarm turn under the boy's raised left arm.
Counts 3-4: release the girl's right hand so she can finish her turn in front of a new partner.
Counts 5-6: rock step back on left and forward on right and be ready to join hands with new partner.

Girl's Part:

Counts 1-2: begin turn by stepping out to the right and pivoting on right foot in a clockwise direction.
Counts 3-4: continue to pivot on the right while completing the turn by stepping and pivoting on left foot.
Counts 5-6: rock back on the right then forward on the left.

Note: The girl is moving away from her partner in the line of direction to end up facing a new partner. To stay with the same partner do the turn in place.

Variations:

Change the dance by adding more single Lindy variations as they are learned.

Let the boy do the underarm turn leading to his left and in the line of direction to make the mixer.

Try the double or triple Lindy rhythms instead of the single Lindy rhythm.

Try slower or faster music.

Assessment Ideas:

Have students make up their own routines using these steps or others.

Have the students create their own mixers.

Have the students add more movements to the mixer.

Teaching Suggestions:

Have students perform the dance steps without a partner.

Use slower music.

Have the students dance in a line or single circle without partners.

Use fewer variations in the mixer (for instance, omit the collegiate turns).

Do the dance in a double circle, but omit the mixer.
