Name of Activity: CrossOver

Purpose of Activity: To make students aware of other people when moving in a small space.

Prerequisites: Knowledge of one's personal space; ability to travel using various locomotor movements.

Suggested Grade Level: K-2

Materials Needed: Carpet squares or poly spots (some type of individual marking on the floor).

Description of Idea

Before class begins, set up the space as follows: carpet squares should be placed on the floor in a large square formation, with 2 to 3 feet between each square. Make sure the four lines (sides of the square) have the same, or close to the same, number of squares.

To begin the activity, have the students pick their own carpet square to stand on. This is their personal space . Assign each side of the square a number (the sides which face one another -- e.g. opposite sides -- can be given the same number). At your signal, the students will CrossOver to the carpet squares on the other side using the locomotor movement you designate; e.g., "Number 1's, CrossOver walking." (You may have to say Number 1's and 3's, if you gave each side a different number.) Then, "Number 2's, CrossOver walking." As you continue, change the locomotor skills. When students can CrossOver running without bumping into anyone, then have all students CrossOver at the same time walking. Can they do it without bumping into anyone? Continue with other locomotor movements.

Assessment Ideas:

Observe to see if students are able to safely move out of the space of others? Or do they run into each other?
