Suggested Grade Level: K-2 Materials Needed: None necessary, but this can make a game out of demonstrating how to use a prop or piece of equipment, and how to put it away before launching into the next activity. Or it can be a game, in and of itself, to teach the children to listen and observe closely. Description of Idea My class starts with a lively follow-the-leader warm-up, in place, through space, or both, to music. When the music stops, I'm in a frozen shape. While frozen, I call out, "1,2,3...Can you SEE me?" The students stay frozen and watch to see where I go and what I do next. I may walk quickly over to a jump rope and begin jumping, then I say, "Do you SEE me?" (heads start nodding), "Then you can BE me!" All go quickly to the ropes (or whatever props or pieces of equipment I have previously spread around the room). To end the activity, I repeat the call, but when the students look, I model walking quickly (but not running) to put the prop away, and I can immediately demostrate by where I go next, what I want them to do after putting away the props. |
