Name of Activity: Roll the Die

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials Needed: Large poster with exercises (or sports movements) listed next to a corresponding number of dots on a die. (1 dot = Jumping Jacks, 2 dots = Jog in place, 3 dots = Shoot baskets, etc. to 6 dots); music and music source with "pause" button; several foam dice for small groups or one if the whole class does the activity together.

Description of Idea

Choose six exercises or sports movements. These should be ones students are familiar with, in order to save time. Assign each a number on the die (see "materials" above); hang the big poster for all to see.

To begin, have one child roll the die. The number rolled will correspond with an exercise on the poster. Begin the music and class does the exercise as long as the music plays (15 or so seconds). The next child rolls the die and when the music begins, the class does that exercise for 15 seconds, etc. If the same number is rolled twice in a row, the next exercise is a "free choice" as designated by the person who rolled the die.

Instead of doing the activity as a whole group, you can provide a die for each small group (6 in a group). When the music begins, all groups do the exercise which corresponds to the number rolled for their group. This will give all children an opportunity to roll the die.

Teaching Suggestions:

Allow the student who rolled the die to hand the die to another student.
If you have students working in small groups, you can have them work together to decide what movement each number on the die will stand for. Give each group a posterboard and have them write their movements up; these different sets can be used throughout the year.
