Name of Activity: The Old Brass Wagon Hoop Dance

Purpose of Activity: Direction, skipping in rhythm, right side-left side recognition, cooperation

Prerequisites: Students have worked with small groups/partners before, Skipped to a beat

Suggested Grade Level: PK-3

Materials Needed: 1 Hula Hoop for every three children; washable black marker

Recommended music:

Old Brass Wagon by Barney (PK-K)

Old Brass Wagon by Steve and Greg (We All Live Together Series) (PK-3)

Beginning dance formation: Three children for each hoop NOTE: Three (3) is good for small children/can increase number in each group according to the size hoops available

Description of Idea

NOTE TO GET STARTED: I play the music so that the students will move around. I then stop the music and call out the number three. Students know to find three people in their group as quickly as they can. This helps eliminate picky choosers. Each group gets a hoola hoop and must hold it with their left hand. I start the music again and go around and mark their left hand with a black dot.(Of course, this is for the younger kids)

First Verse:

  • "Circle to the left the old brass wagon" - Students hold the hoop with left hand and skip around the hoop

    Second Verse:

  • "Circle to the right the old brass wagon" - Students hold the hoop with right hand and skip around the hoop

    Third Verse:

  • "Everyone in the old brass wagon" - Students hold the hoop up and get inside pulling the hoop down around their waist. They may jump in the circle.

    Fourth Verse:

  • "Everybody out the old brass wagon" - Students duck their head down pulling the hoop back over their head and step out. Then they continue to skip around with their left hand.

    The Ending:

  • There is a banjo at the end that does a few last notes. Instruct the students to drop the hoop and everyone sit inside before the banjo finishes the song.

    Assessment Ideas:

Most assessment is done by just watching to see if the children are using the proper hand and skipping in the proper direction. The teacher should correct any detected problems as they occur. It is a good idea to repeat the activity the following week, without marking the child's hand with the black dot.

    Adaptations for Students with Disabilities:

Those children with physical disabilities might benefit from being in smaller groups, having larger hoops, walk instead of skip, etc.
