Name of Activity: Angry Birds

Purpose of Activity: To reinforce throwing cues while having students work together to achieve a goal.

Prerequisites: Prior introduction to underhand and/or overhand throwing skills.

Suggested Grade Level: K-2

Materials Needed: foam bricks, bean bags, fleece/yarn balls, cones

Description of Idea

Most students are aware of the game Angry Birds, where a bird is catapulted into a structure, attempting to knock it down and roll the pigs inside the structure away. This activity takes that game and makes it live action. The students are working on skills while having fun!

Divide the class into small groups, preferably 2-3 students per group. Give each group the same number of foam bricks, as well as three fleece/yarn balls, and one bean bag. Tell the students that they are going to build a structure, and then take turns, using their throwing skills, to knock down the structure.

I give the students a few minutes to build the structure. Since not every student is aware of the game, I gave a quick visual when introducing the game.

Once the structure is complete, and they have placed the "pigs" inside the structure, the group lines up behind a cone in front of their playing area and takes turn throwing the bean bag. Once the structure has been knocked down, the group can rebuild and try again. If it is knocked down before everyone in the group has had a chance to throw the bean bag, then those people go first the next time.

I give the students about ten minutes with this activity and they love it!

Assessment Ideas:

Are the students able to hit the target? Ask the students to choose a certain color block to throw at first. "Try hitting the red block first." Also - this is also a cooperative activity. Are the students working well together or are the coming up to the teacher to ask for help.

Adaptations for Students with Disabilities:

Students in a wheelchair can certainly help build as the tower gets taller, as well as throw the ball.

I tried this activity with kindergarten and 1st grade. They loved it. The children were working together as a team, cooperating with one another and being very creative with their buildings. As well as, focusing on throwing to a target. The energy in the gym was contagious. I didn't have foam blocks , so I asked the teachers to write in their homework books for anyone to bring in shoe boxes from home. I collected all sorts of sizes.
I made up a score sheet, where the students had to keep track of their score. Kindergarten wrote down numbers and the 1st grade us tally marks to keep score. This lesson worked well. I will be including this lesson in the future.

Once the structure is complete, and they have placed the "pigs" inside the structure.....

Am I missing something? The directions don't specify which items are the pigs. I am assuming the yarn balls are since the bean bags are being thrown.

Oh man, my kids loved this activity. I aint got no foam bricks but dome cones seem to work. The kids were building crazy looking castle structures to knock down. In the end they were all smiling and having a fun time. Thanks a lot.
