Name of Activity: Spelling Bee Tag

Purpose of Activity: To practice spelling classroom words while chasing, fleeing and dodging.

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials Needed: 3-5 clip boards with classroom weekly spelling words (I use 1 clip board for every 5 students), 2-3 noodles for tagging, 6-8 hula hoops

Description of Idea

Scatter 6-8 hula hoops around your playing area. Choose 2-3 students to be spelling bee taggers. They hold the noodles. Choose 3-5 students to be spelling bee teachers. They hold the clipboards with their classroom spelling list attached. All of the other students are spelling bee fleers. The spelling bee fleers will move around the gym performing various locomotor movements (walking, skipping, galloping, sliding, hopping, etc.). When a spelling bee fleer is tagged, they go stand inside a hula hoop. The spelling bee teachers quiz them on a spelling word from the list. If the spelling bee fleer spells the word correctly, the spelling bee teacher gives them the spelling bee clipboard as a reward. Now the roles are reversed, the spelling bee teacher is now a spelling bee fleer and the fleer is now the spelling bee teacher. If the student spells the word wrong, the spelling bee teacher nicely spells the word correctly for the fleer. Now the spelling bee fleer has to perform an aerobic exercise (monkey dances, bobsleds, jumping jacks, spider dances, hand shuffle, foot shuffle, ect.) while they spell the word three times. Once they spell the word three times, they are allowed to reenter the game. Change spelling bee taggers and teachers (if needed) after two minutes of play.

I did my student teaching with Eric, and this game was AWESOME! The kids LOVED the opportunity to be the "teacher" and it's a great way to integrate classroom learning into physical education!
