Academic content: Math Purpose of Activity: To teach the concept of moving in a clockwise and counterclockwise direction and to tell time using addition and subtraction. Prerequisites: Students need to be familiar with the different locomotor movement skills being used and basic addition and subtraction. Suggested Grade Level: 2-3 Materials Needed: 4 cones with signs, upbeat music, 12 poly spots, cut and laminated numbers 1-12, a large cone and a small cone set on it's side. Physical activity: Movement Concepts - Space Awareness Description of Idea Have the students find a large space in the gym. Introduce/review the concept of clockwise and counterclockwise with the class. Make a large clock to go in the center of the gym floor (in the jumpball circle) using cut-out numbers placed on poly spots and cones and cut out hands for the hands of the clock to give the students a point of reference. Place a sign with different movement skills on them in the corners of the gym (ex. jog, skip, walk, grapevine, gallop, jump, leap). Tell the students to begin moving clockwise using the skill that is on the sign closest to them. When the music stops they will move to the opposite side of the gym. Clockwise or counterclockwise will be called out as they are moving to the opposite gym side. When they reach the opposite side of the gym begin the music and the students will begin moving in the direction specified using the skill on the card closest to them. Repeat as many times as necessary and vary the locomotor skills that are used (3-4 minute song). If the students need clarification of the concept, stand at the clock on the floor and walk around it in the correct direction specified. Next have the students apply the math skills of addition and subtraction to the clock. The teacher will instruct the students to imagine what time they would like to be on the clock. Have the students make that number with their bodies or hold up the proper number of fingers. The teacher will then tell them they are to add two hours to the clock, so what time would it now be? Have the students do the locomotor movement that is closest to them, two times around the gym (students might leap two times around the gym in the direction specified). The teacher could follow the same approach with subtraction problems, as well. Variations: Take the clock away for older students.
Introduce word problems using time, such as Billy left the house to go to the ball game at 5 o'clock. The game lasted for three hours. What time was the game over?
Introduce the concept by first using the parachute.
Use 5-6 clocks scattered about on the floor. Assessment Ideas: Students are able to move in the correct direction using the correct skill.
Give the students a clock worksheet at the end of the lesson that deals with the above addtiton and subtraction problems. |
