Name of Activity:
Occupy the Gym Floor
Purpose of Activity:* To encourage students to be active. * To cross the body midline with movements on a specific rhythm. * To perform a 64-count line dance.
Prerequisites:To have practiced the grapevine step and angle step.
Suggested Grade Level:6-8
Materials Needed:CD Player, suggested music: "Kidz Bop 18 - Evacuate the Dancefloor"
Recommended music:Kidz Bop 18 - Evacuate the Dancefloor
Beginning dance formation:Staggered Rows
Description of Idea
Each "step" is 8 counts. The steps will be repeated five times throughout the song.
There is a 16-count intro to the song. Begin dancing when the singing starts.
1. Angle Step:
Start with feet together. Step forward and to the right with the right foot and then together with the left foot. Step forward to the left with the left foot and then together with the right foot. Then follow your steps backward.
Cues: “Step, together, step, together, step, together, step, together”
2. Jump Step:
Jump with feet apart, jump while crossing feet, jump with feet apart, jump together. Then repeat steps once more.
Cues: “Open, cross, open, together, open, cross, open, together”
3. Punch Step:
Step forward with the right foot, then together with the left. Punch the right hand in front of the body to the left side, then the left hand crossed over the right. Step back with the right foot and then together with the left (keeping the hands as they were.) Then punch the right hand in front of the body to the left side, then the left hand crossed over the right.
Cues: “Step, together, punch, punch, step, together, punch, punch”
4. Marching Step:
March in place, x8
Cues: “March, march, march, march, march, march, march, march”
5. Grapevine Step:
Right foot step to the right, left behind, right foot step to the right, together. (Clap optional, smile mandatory.) Left foot step to the left, right behind, left foot step to the left, together.
Cues: “Grapevine to the right, grapevine to the left”
6. Turn Step:
Right knee up and step forward, pivot to the left with both feet down. Repeat once, and: Right knee up and step together.
Cues: “Knee, step, turn, knee, step, turn, knee, step, together”
7. Stop Step:
While marching in place, right arm extended with palm forward for one count. Bring the arm back to the body for one count. Left arm extended with palm forward for one count, and bring the hand back for one count. Both arms extended forward with palms facing out for two counts. Bring the hand back with a hold for two counts.
Cues: “Right hand out-in, left hand out-in, both hands out-out-in-in.
8. Down Step:
Right hand up, palm forward for two counts. Left hand up, palm forward for two counts. Slowly bring hands down to sides to 4 counts.
“Right up, left up, hands down slowly”
After completing these eight steps described above, repeat five times.
Challenge older students to cue the dance as the class performs it.
Adaptations for Students with Disabilities:
On the Turn Step, have students do a basic 8 count turn.
