Name of Activity: Healthy Living Jump Rope Rhyme

Purpose of Activity: To have the children learn the rhyme, talking about the healthy concepts in it.

Prerequisites: We have already practiced jump rope skills.

Suggested Grade Level: 2-5

Materials Needed: Ropes for all children, and the poster of the jump rope rhyme.

Description of Idea

The children will start by sitting at the white board, learning the rhyme. We will discuss the healthy living points on the poster. Then the children will go to a personal space and jump as a group to the cadence of the rhyme.
The following is the rhyme;

Healthy kids need healthy food,
grains, fruits and veggies, taste so good.

Sleeping 10 hours is always best,
your body is repaired when you get your rest.

Your young lungs are very pink,
smoking makes them BLACK and your breath will stink.

Exercising with friends is always fun,
whether it's rope jumping or going on a run.

Good dental hygiene will make you smile,
and healthy looking teeth are always in style.

You want to stop colds or cough or flu,
washing your hands is the best thing to do.

Working on healthy habits is the key,
to being the BEST that you can be!

Variations:

This could be done with long ropes with 2 friends turning and reciting the rhyme, then switching so all get a turn to jump the poem.

Assessment Ideas:

To assess that learning took place, an ending discussion can be done or a fill in the blank paper and pencil quiz.

Adaptations for Students with Disabilities:

Those who cannot jump can turn a big rope for others and say the rhyme for them. If they are wheelchair bound, they can recite the rhyme for a friend.
