Name of Activity: Hockey Skills Card Activity

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials Needed: 1 Puck or Hockey Ball per student, 20-30 Laminated Skills Cards, 1 Hockey Stick per student, music

Description of Idea

Spread the Hockey Skills Cards around the floor of the playing area prior to the students entering the gym. Upon entering, students get a hockey puck or hockey ball and a hockey stick. When the music starts, the students will move to a card, read the back of the card and perform the stick-handling skill on the card. Below are some examples of the stick-handling skills that can be used:

Stickhandle in your own space
for 30 Seconds

After completing the stickhandling skill, the students should move to another card and perform the activity on that card. Students should continue to move from card to card performing the stickhandling skills until the activity is over. The teacher will either have to time the students to let them know when 30 seconds is up, or use the music (by stopping and re-starting it) to let students know when to stop and move to the next card.

Variations:

- Velcro on the pucks and sticks.
- Larger Pucks or Balls
- Could make special cards with easier exercises.
