Name of Activity: Tennis Follow the Leader

Suggested Grade Level: 4-6

Materials Needed: 1 tennis ball and 1 racquet per student

Description of Idea

Students will line up in a single file. The student in the front of the line leads the class in open space whichever way they choose. The leader is instructed to perform tennis movements and the rest of the class is to follow in a "follow the leader" fashion. The "leader" is instructed to perform movements with their tennis ball and racket such as: bouncing the ball up and down in the air, bouncing the ball to the ground with the racquet, placing the racquet down on the ground and jumping over it, etc. The leader is allowed to choose whichever movements come to mind.

After 20-30 seconds the instructor blows a whistle and the next person in line is now the leader.

Variations:

Provide students with tools/equipment that are easier to manipulate than an actual tennis ball and racquet.
