Name of Activity: Birthday Party

Purpose of Activity: To provide students practice in throwing for accuracy.

Prerequisites: Students should have knowledge on proper throwing technique prior to activity.

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials Needed: 12 cones, 15-20 gatorskin balls, 4 folding mats, 20+ plastic bowling pins

Description of Idea

Use the cones to divide the gym into four quadrants. Each quadrant is a "birthday party". Play on this; have fun with it, make one a swimming party, ice skating party, etc. Divide the students into four teams and send them to one of the parties. They must stay within the boundaries of their party for the game.

In the center of each party place a folding mat (the birthday cake) (keep it folded). Give each team four candles (bowling pins) to put on their cake. Divide presents to each party (gatorskin balls).

Object of game is to throw the presents and knock out the other teams candles, while also guarding your own candles. The teams have to work together to have guards and throwers to complete the task.

To make the game continuous, you can allow the students to pick up a candle of theirs if they knock out a candle from another team.

Assessment Ideas:

The teacher can assess throwing technique throughout the game.

Teaching Suggestions:

Students are not allowed to touch the candles to stop them from falling. They must stay on their feet and not kneel/sit in front of the candles to guard them
