Name of Activity: Pond Hockey

Purpose of Activity: To introduce dribbling/stick handling.

Prerequisites: Introduction to skill cues.

Suggested Grade Level: K-2

Materials Needed: 1 hula hoop (various sizes), 1 hockey stick, 1 yarn ball per student, 1 poly spot for each hoop (optional)

Description of Idea

Scatter hoops throughout the playing area. Tell students that in places where it is very cold, hockey is played on frozen ponds. Their hula hoop is a frozen pond. Tell students to place their ball inside their hoop and their feet outside the hoop.

* Activity 1: Students dribble the yarn ball inside the hoop side to side -- then wide, narrow, fast, slow, wide and slow, narrow and fast, etc.

* Activity 2: Tell students to dribble the ball around their hoop, and depending on the skill level, try fast, slow, forward, backward, clockwise, counter clockwise, etc.

Activity 3: Tell students they are going to visit all the frozen hockey ponds. Students dribble the ball from one hoop to another. When the students arrive at a different hoop/pond, they can try the pond out by dribbling three times inside each pond before going to another pond.

Activity 4: The ponds are melting! Students need to find their way home fast. On your cue, students dribble in-between all of the hoops.

Assessment Ideas:

teacher observation skill cues

Teaching Suggestions:

Good introductory activity K-1, as the hoops are a tangible boundary. Teacher can easily rotate around class to check grip and give feedback. Have balls that move at different speeds available and allow students choose the ball they use. Have poly spots with numbers on them inside the hoops for activity 3. Use an instant activity that incorporates hoops to save time with set up.

Adaptations for Students with Disabilities:

various sized balls, deflated balls, balls with sound, different sized sticks and grips, etc.
