Name of Activity: Scarf Fanfare

Suggested Grade Level: K-5

Materials Needed: Juggling scarves, music, poly spots.

Description of Idea

Before students arrive to class, scatter 30-40 poly spots throughout the activity area. Juggling scarves are placed outside the playing area.

As students arrive, ask them to pick-up two scarves and begin to skip around the room. One scarf is placed in one hand, the other scarf in the other hand. When the music stops, students will quickly find a poly spot and create a statue, holding one scarf at one level and the other scarf at a different level. Then, the teacher calls, "Switch," and students change the levels of the scarves. Students are to change their personal body level as well.

When the music begins playing again, students begin to travel throughout general space using the locomotor movement that the teacher specifies.

Movement ideas for the scarves:

Make as many arm patterns as possible.

Freeze using different body shapes (i.e., symmetrical, asymmetrical, wide, narrow, twisted, round).

Toss scarves in air and catch at different levels.

Toss and catch scarves using the two-scarf cascade method (i.e., toss, toss, catch, catch).

Move the scarves through the legs.

Variations:

Have students carry an extra scarf so they may practice juggling with three scarves (i.e., cascade, columns, shower, etc.)

While music is continuously playing, have students throw and catch matching the number on the poly spot (numbered 1 - 10). After throwing the specified number of times, students skip, jump, hop, etc., to the next highest number to begin throwing and catching again.

Instead of giving students verbal directions when they first enter the physical education classroom, have them read instead.
