Suggested Grade Level: 3rd and Up Materials Needed: Cones for general space boundaries, one fleece/yarn/foam ball for each student. Description of Idea Give each student a yarn or fleece ball. Have students spread out in the playing area in their own self space. On the signal (whistle, music) students must move around the general space trying to throw their ball (in an underhand throwing motion) at their classmates feet. The object is to hit as many feet as possible during the time limit. After throwing the ball the students retrieve the ball, return to the playing area, and continue playing trying to hit as many different classmates feet as possible. Their is NO standing still and throwing at a best friends feet! Students may avoid someone else's ball from hitting their feet by jumping, sliding, etc. Give positive feedback to students who are practicing good "foot dodges." Variations: 1. Older students can use the overhand throwing motion.
2. Have students throw with their non-dominant hand. This makes for a good conversation after the activity is over. You can talk about how it feels to be "differently skilled."
3. Take resting pulse before and after activity to see how this activity raises heart rate. Teaching Suggestions: 1. Set up boundary cones so they are away from walls. Students have a tendency to run after stray balls with their head down.
2. Make sure your students have a good grasp on moving in general space with others in a dynamic setting.
3. Start the activity off by walking. Then change to more difficult locomotor movements as you are satisfied with safety. |
