![]() Name of Activity: DB -- Differentiated Baseball for Teachers
Academic content: any subject area in need of review Purpose of Activity: To review academic material while allowing students the opportunity to move. Prerequisites: Basic understanding of baseball: running the bases, knowledge of singles, doubles, batting team, fielding team, etc. Suggested Grade Level: 3-5 Materials Needed: bases or designated bases, such as trees, sticks, etc. Physical activity: physical fitness and running the bases Description of Idea Divide the students into two teams. The outfield team will set up in a scattered formation. The other team will be the batting team. There are no outs in this game, only opportunities to learn/review. Each team is allowed to have six players up to bat each inning. Option 1- Each player is given the opportunity to choose the difficulty (self-differentiation) based on whether (s)he would like to hit a single, double, triple, or home run. A single is the easiest question to ask, double more difficult, etc. Option 2- The teacher chooses the question based on knowledge of each player. This allows a teacher to help a child succeed and perhaps be the hero of the game. After a question is given, if the answer is correct, the player moves to that base. There is no penalty if the question is answered wrong and no opportunity to get on base at that time. Option 3- Either a player is given the opportunity to choose the difficulty level or the teacher chooses the question, but if the player doesn’t know the answer they may use the “Call a Friend” or “Shout Out”(Cash Cab) option. If the friend is correct, the player is allowed on base. Single-one base Each player on base also moves the number of bases to help score runs, i.e., a player on first base moves to third base after a batter hits a double. After six players have had an opportunity to be up to bat, switch sides. The fielding team performs ten jumping jacks for each correct answer. Change the exercise with each inning change. Variations: This could be used for recognizing site words, arithmetic problems, spelling, etc., or any subject area of need of review. Assessment Ideas: Assessment is ongoing. Students can show understanding by giving a correct answer or learn the answer by asking a friend. Adaptations for Students with Disabilities: Teacher selects questions that are best answered by children with disabilities. |
