Name of Activity: ROAD RALLY

Prerequisites: Listen to rules and watch demo for game: ROAD RALLY! (drive safely, do not run-move as described below-teacher will demonstrate, do not crash, pass each other safely, stay on the road!). Participate, with safety at the top of the “important” list

Suggested Grade Level: 1-3

Materials Needed:

A gym, with lines painted everywhere. (Most gyms have lines painted for basketball and volleyball courts – these lines cross and connect all over the gym floor and will serve as “roadways” for little “drivers”.

Music (optional) - Suggestions for music: On the Road Again (Willy Nelson), Born to Be Wild (Steppenwolf)

Description of Idea

Children will start by pretending they are “driving around” on the connected ‘roads’ (lines on floor) in their invisible cars: hands on steering wheel, feet make short, fast walks with souls of feet sliding.…..in other words, DO NOT RUN! The motion is a smoothe one and not too fast. (Teacher demonstrate)

THERE IS NO CRASHING

Children can go anywhere on the lines, but their feet must stay in contact with the lines (at least one foot must be on a line). They cannot jump from one line to another. Also, hands must try to stay on imaginary ‘steering wheel’.

When 2 children come ‘face-to-face’, they must find a way to get past each other, without ‘falling off the road”----at least one foot must stay in contact with road/line. (IDEAS: one child spreads legs (with one foot touching a line) while the other crawls under, maintaining contact with line. OR, one child stoops down with head down and head covered with arms, while other child steps over. OR, children can try to pass each other while standing, but one foot must always be in contact with the line.

At end, teacher gathers students and asks them to say “YES” by raising their hands, then ask them: Did you drive safely? Did you crash? Did you stay on the road and not fall off? Did you pass someone safely? Show me with your fingers how many times you had to pass someone!

Variations:

Teacher can award each child who drove safely a “safe driver” certificate. Make sure children know they should not try to drive the family car, as they are not old enough or properly trained for that!! (they will laugh!)

Adaptations for Students with Disabilities:

All children who can move can play. Children in wheelchairs can play also, but of course the "stay on the line' concept will not always apply to them. They must stay close to the line, however.
