Suggested Grade Level: 3-5 Materials Needed: Cones for boundaries, 3-5 foam balls, candy canes (amount depends on the size of the class), 3-5 pinnies (preferably red), and several hoops Description of Idea Use cones to determine the playing area and then scatter the hoops in the area. Have students find their own personal space in the playing area around the hoops. Designate 3-5 taggers (these students will hold a foam ball). Designate 3-5 "rescuers" (these students will wear pinnies). Designate all other students to be candy canes (these students will hold a candy cane). On the teacher's "GO" signal, the taggers try to tag the "candy canes" and the "rescuers" with the foam ball. When a "candy cane" or "rescuer" is tagged, he/she stands in a hoop. Only the "rescuers" can free "candy canes" and other "rescuers" who are standing in hoops. To free them, the "rescuers" lift the hoop up and over the "candy cane" and then places the hoop back on the floor. The "rescuers" cannot be tagged while rescuing others. When a "rescuer" is tagged during the activity, he/she loses power by removing their pinny and getting a candy cane from the teacher. This student now reenters the activity as a "candy cane" player. Give the extra pinny to another student or keep the pinny until all "rescuers" have been tagged (this is a good way to end the activity). Variations: Make sure all students get a chance to be a tagger, "rescuer", and/or "candy cane".
Move hoops to a separate area or place them around the perimeter of the playing area for safety reasons.
Give all students a candy cane after class or at lunch.
Instead of candy canes use lollipops for a "Lollipop Rescue". On a healthier note, use fruits, health bars, or small packages of nuts.
Use bean bags (or another object) instead of food or candy for a "Bean Bag Rescue". Teaching Suggestions: Have students travel at a safe speed, especially when there are hoops on the ground.
Don't let students eat the candy canes or put them in their mouths.
Have the "rescuers" lift the hoops up slowly and carefully. |
