Name of Activity: Snowball Tag

Suggested Grade Level: K-5

Materials Needed: Cones for boundaries, 2 yarn balls per student (plus extras), and several mats

Description of Idea

Establish boundaries with cones. This playing area is for the "snowball fight". In a separate area (close to the "snowball fight" area), place several mats on the ground. This is the area where students make "snow angels".

Give each student two yarn balls. Scatter extra yarn balls in the "snow fight" playing area. Have students scatter throughout this playing area also. On the teacher's "GO" signal, students have a "snowball fight" by throwing the yarn balls at each other below the knees. If a student is hit by a "snowball", the student who was hit must go and make a "snow angel" where the mats are located. To make a snow angel, the student lies on their back and moves their arms and legs in the motion of a jumping jack/jill. Students repeat this procedure for the designated number of times and then return to the "snowball fight".

Note: Students may not hold more than two snowballs at a time and when a student has no more snowballs, he/she tries to pick a snowball up from the ground.

Teaching Suggestions:

Start with underhand throwing and then progress to overhand throws when students are ready.

Have students perform the "snow angel" at a slow speed.

Make sure students are able to control their body movements during the "snowball fight".

Have extra yarn balls so student stay active. This also reduces the chances of a "real" fight.
