Name of Activity: Turkeys and Feathers

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials Needed: Cones for boundaries, cloth belts or flag belts for all students (except the taggers), and hoops (one for each tagger)

Description of Idea

Use cones to determine the boundaries for the playing area. Place the hoops inside the designated playing area. Select 4-6 taggers (these students are the turkeys). Have the turkeys start in a hula hoop. All other students must put on a cloth belt (these students are the feathers and are going to be chased by the turkeys). Have the feathers scatter in the playing area.

Turkeys need feathers, so on the teacher's "GO" signal, the turkeys try to catch (tag) a feather. When a feather is tagged by a turkey, the feather gives the turkey his/her cloth belt. In other words, they switch positions. The "new turkey" and the "new feather" then continue playing the activity. The hoops are safe zones for the feathers. Only one feather can stand in a hoop at a time. A feather can stay in hoop until another feather wants to enter.

Teaching Suggestions:

Have students travel at a safe speed to avoid collisions.

Change the locomotor movement (i.e, walking, skipping, leaping, etc.).

Instead of Turkeys and Feathers, create other terminology for the activity. For example, Sylvester and Tweety Bird.
