Name of Activity: Hockey Scramble

Purpose of Activity: To practice the skill of dribbling with a long handled implement in open spaces, while at the same time shooting at goals spread out all over the floor.

Prerequisites: Lessons on proper use of the hockey sticks, grip, passing and stopping a soft object in place and on the move, dribbling in wide open spaces avoiding others, dribbling around obstacles, and shooting at goals from different angles on the floor.

Suggested Grade Level: K-2

Materials Needed: long handled implements, such as foam hockey sticks or nerf noodles (one for each student); 24 or more soft balls, such as medium-size rhino balls, gatorskin balls, small beach balls, yarn balls, etc.; 20-24 cones

Description of Idea

Place cones (using two to make one goal) around the perimeter of the activity area and lay the soft balls in the center circle. Divide students into two groups and give each a long handled implement. One group will start the game as "shooters" and the other group will start as "goalies." The "shooters" begin the game in the center of the gym. The "goalies" begin the game in front of a goal and use their "hockey" implement to block goals (one “goalie” per goal). On a signal, the “shooters" will try to dribble the balls from the center and shoot at any goal on the floor. If a ball goes into a goal, the “goalie” retrieves it and puts it back into play. Stop play after three minutes. The "goalies" bring all the balls to the center and spread them out before becoming "shooters." The "shooters" stand in front of a goal and become "goalies."

Assessment Ideas:

Use a checklist rubric listing proper grip, moving safely in open spaces, dribbling with good control, shooting from different angles, and blocking balls when in the goal area. Record one or more of the skills as present or absent.
