Job Description & Information:
The Duke School Lower School Physical Education teacher is the primary instructional delivery person for developing physical literacy for students from Preschool (3 & 4 year olds) to Fourth Grade. This exciting position is varied and complex. The educator must be collaborative, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and be well trained in physical education content knowledge, early learners, and effective and engaging teaching strategies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties of this position include the following. The teacher in this position performs some or all of the following tasks.
1.Demonstrates motivation and enthusiasm with a genuine passion for teaching young learners.
2.Demonstrates the ability to create a child-centered experience.
3.Facilitates childrenís physical, cognitive and social and emotional learning through lessons designed to sequentially develop skills appropriate to their ability and confidence levels.
4.Provides engaging, fun, and effective instruction that helps build a health and wellness foundation for young children.
5.Teaches knowledge and skills in motor development, physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance utilizing curriculum and appropriate learning activities.
6.Provides maximum participation for all students; differentiates as needed to ensure all students
7.Analyzes, demonstrates, and explains basic skills, knowledge and strategies of games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
8.Develops engaging and effective lesson plans and supplementary materials.
9.Supports classroom project work by integrating activities when appropriate and feasible.
10.Provides ongoing formative feedback to students.
11.Demonstrates a growth mindset individually and supports this development with all students.
12.Participates in school-sponsored professional development and seeks development opportunities for growth.
13.Communicates in developmentally appropriate ways through a sensitive approach that clearly conveys that every child, regardless of ability, can succeed and will benefit from a physically active, healthy lifestyle. Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
14.Collaborates with school team members in providing ideas and support to increase health and
wellness, movement and activity within the classroom.
15.Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive
environment in the physical education areas.
16.Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment to ensure the overall safety of students.
17.Evaluates fitness and social and emotional growth of students and keeps appropriate records as necessary. Collaborates with classroom teachers to share with parents as necessary.
18.Partners with Specialís Team for group planning and to support student (carline, assemblies, etc) life.
19.Maintains control of storage, PE equipment and school property.
20.Actively supports and builds a strong positive culture and learning environment.
21.Work cooperatively and collaboratively with team members, parents, community members, and partners to improve the instructional program and student success.
22.Effectively uses technology to support effective instruction and student learning.
23.And other duties as assigned by the Head of School or Division Director.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
● Bachelorís Degree
● Teaching License with a Physical Education Endorsement
● Two years or more of experience teaching physical education at the elementary level.
● Experience teaching National Standards for Physical Education at the elementary level
● Masterís Degree
