Title of Bulletin Board:
Monitoring Your Heart Rate
Category:
About the Body
Suggested Grade Level:
3-5
Materials:
Bulletin Board paper, border, letters, diagram of the human heart with labels, directions on how to find heart rate & any definitions you are teaching
Description:
Students are learning how to find their heart rate. We use Pulse Sticks in PE class, so the students are aware what their maximum heart rate is, what their target heart rate zone is, as well as their resting heart rate. All of these definitions are presented on the board as a reminder. Students have also learned the blood flow pattern through the heart, therefore this is also presented and labeled for them to see. Finally, the students have recently learned HOW to find your heart rate. These directions are also posted for the students, incase they forget. Students use their index and middle finger from one hand to find their pulse on EITHER their wrist or neck (most use their neck). They count the amount of beats they feel in 10 seconds. They then multiply that number by 6, to find their Beats Per Minute (BPM).
Additional Information:
If students are asked to find their heart rate during a PE activity, I will tell them when to begin counting and when to finish. However, if students are finding their heart rate on their own (in class, at home, etc.), they also learned how to watch the second hand on a clock/watch as they count their heart beats. Quick math lesson: (many students can multiply in their head) Other students had better success when breaking the number down into multiplication facts they already know. Example: (Resting Heart Rate) ALWAYS use a multiple of 10 (without going over your number) to multiple by 6. 14 beats - 10 = 4 (Multiply both 10 and 4 by 6) 10 * 6 = 60 4 * 6 = 24 60 + 24 = 84 bpm EXAMPLE: (Target Heart Rate Zone - Exercising) 32 beats - 30 = 2 (Multiple both 30 and 2 by 6) 30 * 6 = 180 2 * 6 = 12 180 + 12 = 192 bpm This helped many students when doing large multiplication number in their head.
