PEC: Bulletin Boards for Physical Education

Title of Bulletin Board: Stick Figure Movement

Category: Skill Themes

Suggested Grade Level: All

Materials: Yellow sheets of large art paper, letter cutting machine, black construction paper, sheets of paper, Sharpie marker, Awesome Elementary School Physical Education Activities text (by Cliff Carnes)

Description:

I wanted to create a bulletin board for the beginning of the school year that would encompass what we do in PE. With an incoming group of first graders (some of who cannot read well if at all), I thought by placing pictures of stick figures doing specific movements that we do, they can get the idea of exactly what is involved in our gym. In my district, children do not receive physical education in Kindergarten, so this is the first exposure they have to it.

I lined the bulletin board with 2 very large sheets of yellow art paper for the background. I cut and stapled them to fit. Then I placed a basic white boarder around the edges of the board.

In order to make the stick figures, I used the Awesome Elementary School Physical Education Activities book, by Cliff Carnes. I drew the figures FREEHAND based on how they looked in the book. I then placed them on the board and labeled what each movement was by using Microsoft Word (Word Art).

Additional Information:

This bulletin board is a big hit. Children and parents alike have mentioned to me that it is very easy to read and understand. They like to see what we do in PE. It also teaches children what the movements look like.
