Materials: Map of your state, something to mark progress, (I used tabs) letters to make the sign.

Description:

The purpose of this idea was to incorporate the classroom into PE. Our third graders were studying Nebraska communities and I decided to have a class competition for the third grade to race to Scottsbluff. It is on the other side of the state from Elkhorn where our school is located. After each week we mark the progress based on how many steps the class has taken. It was a good way to create awareness of other communities in our state because they will ask where they are at and I will tell them a town and then they check the map to see where that is.

This can work for any state and I have also found that it increases the participation level and activity level because they want to get more steps than the other third grade classes.
