Title of Bulletin Board: Bully Board

Category: Bullying

Suggested Grade Level: 6-8

Materials: Construction Paper, Tape, Sissors and Overhead projector

Description:

The Bully Board is a strong visual that reminds our students that words really can hurt. We posted a graphic of an individual that has very positive body language and one that has very negative body language and asked the students to describe what kinds of words promoted which figure. We found it was very thought-provoking among our students and the negative words were greatly reduced in our classroom. The students are encouraged to add to each side of the board as they have these different experiences.

I really like this one, I am going to use this one for my middle school kids and I saw another one I would like to use for the elementary students. I really appreciate all the ideas from everyone thank you so much.

We did consider the aspect of the girl being the one to receive the "negative" comments. We were under some time constraints and had to choose the figures from the clipart we had access to. In our particular classroom, we have had issues with 3 girls in particular and thought that the girl figure might have more impact on them. The figures could definitely be modified for each situation. We love the comments.

Great Idea for a bulletin board. Our kids have gotten the message.

I really think you were right on with your board. I have forwarded it to all the teachers in my school.

Does anyone else see anything wrong with having the female figure the target of the negative comments, and the male figure the object of the positive ones? I see it as another example of unconscious sexism.
