Category:

Suggested Grade Level:
3-5
Materials:
Bulletin Board Paper, Letter Cut Outs, Pictures of the Hygiene Topics you are studying (with the description under the picture), and a picture of a Grub
Description:
Our student body is composed of 4th - 6th grade students (approx. 10-12 year old children). As you can imagine, their version of "good" hygiene varies from the teacher's version of "good" hygiene. Therefore, in the beginning and near the end of the school year, the students learn the importance of and how to achieve "Proper Hygiene," in physical education class. At these ages, we keep it very simple and focus on very BASIC hygiene issues. The issues we covered were: Washing your hands, Showering Daily, Wearing Deodorant, Brushing you teeth, and Drinking enough water. The bulletin board consists of the main topic "Don't Be A Grub....Learn To Scrub". The students love this board, but were not sure what a grub was. After only one day of all the questions, I quickly put a photo of a grub with the "NO" signal on top of it! The students noticed how gross this insect is, and quickly understood the phrase!
Additional Information:
You can cover any hygiene topic(s) you want with this phrase! During the daily lesson, be sure to keep it simple. You will be surprised how many students will ask all the questions you want to cover! Make sure students are aware of the HEALTH issue when discussing hygiene. I made sure to focus on the word "Bacteria", which the students associated with Germ and Bugs! From there, students learned how they were getting sick, such as a cold!
