PEC: Bulletin Boards for Physical Education

Title of Bulletin Board: Speedstack Showdown

Category: Special Events

Suggested Grade Level: All

Materials: Construction Paper

Description:

Last Spring I hosted our first annual Speedstack Showdown for all grades at my school and created this bulletin board to help explain to the students what this event is and what it looks like.

This was an optional event for ALL students. During their PE classes the students would spend 15 minutes practicing their Stack for the event. Grades K-2 were doing the 3 3 3 stack. Grades 3 & 4 were doing the 3 6 3 stack and grades 5 & 6 were doing the Cycle. A week prior to the event, I would test them in their stacks and the 2 fastest stackers, in each grade, would take part in the Speedstack Showdown, during a school assembly.

On the day of the event, 2 students from each grade would face off in a final showdown to see who the faster Speedstacker was. The second place finisher received a silver medal and the first place finisher received a bronze medal.

I wanted to use this bulletin board as a way to teach students about how speedstacking benefits us so the white paper, between the green letters that say Speedstack Showdown, is a list of 10 benefits of speedstacking to help educate the students on why we do a unit on it. They say...
-Cooperation
-Ambidexterity
-Bilateral Coordination
-Hand-Eye Coordination
-Motor Skills
-Brain Activity
-Focus/Concentration
-Reaction Time
-Patterning
-Teamwork

This was a successful event. It gave an opportunity for students to compete in an environment that wasn't too stressful. We had the same amount of girls and boys compete in the final showdown and it also gave an opportunity for students to be on display in front of the school who don't normally get those chances. During the event, I also took advantage of the opportunity to explain to the crowd of students about being a respectful audience and doing positive cheers only and supporting all participants.
