Title of Bulletin Board: Components of Fitness

Category: Fitness

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials: fabric, boarder, pictures from internet, typewritten signs

Description:

I designed this board for my 3rd graders about the components of health-related fitness on their own level and reinforcing 4th through 6th grades. I created this bulletin board that helps the students ask themselves "Would this exercise….?" about the exercise they are doing and how it fits into the components. Under each question, I put the description of the component as well as pictures that illustrate the component.

"…use my muscles a few times?" = Muscular Strength
"…help me use my muscles for a long time?" = Muscular Endurance
Between Muscular Strength and Muscular Endurance, I put Muscular Fitness. I discuss with my students the connection and when strength would turn into endurance depending how long and/or how many repetitions you did for the chosen exercise.
"…make my heart and lungs work harder?" = Cardiovascular Endurance
"…stretch my muscles through bending and reaching?" = Flexibility
For Body Composition, I asked " Am I being active and eating healthy?"

I am finding that through the use of pictures, written descriptions and the interaction of answering questions about the components is really helping my students with a variety of learning styles comprehend the components as they are being active. The descriptions are easy enough even for the 3rd grade students to understand.
