Description:
For this Kindergarten class I chose to create a bulletin board for nutrition. I chose to include a large cut-out of the food pyramid as it is more commonly known for nutrition, but also decided to include MyPlate as it is now the accepted guide for nutrition. I used Velcro to attach the cards to the pyramid and to the plate and cup of MyPlate for the students to be able to interact with the board. I also included much larger images of each food group to the background of the board. Students could learn the food groups from both guides and could correctly place them. I used bright colors, such as teal and gold for the background and letters, to be eye catching (not to mention they are our school colors!). I used foods that were kid friendly and that were easily recognizable. I chose these foods not only for recognition but also to help them learn through discovery. Kids tend to learn by using their favorite things. The surrounding boarder of the board was a beautiful shade of purple and depicted types of food. The multi-colored boarder matched the vibrant colors found on the food pyramid as well as throughout the colorful foods I have scattered across the board. I included many elements to this board but maintained simplicity and structure as to not overwhelm the students. I titled this board "What's on Your Plate?" because I had intended for each student to have the opportunity to "build" their own plate on the board. This allows the students to be creative, interactive, show their personality through favorite foods, and also allows them to learn to present their work on a minimal level at a young age.
