Description:
This bulletin board is a motivational board to encourage walking/running during daily recess or during Fitness Club which meets seasonally one day a week 3-5 graders. The activity encompasses the Chesapeake Public Schools Health and Physical Education Curriculum Overview 2.3, 3.3, 4.3 and 5.3 by Expressing a Willingness to be Physically Fit. We have a quarter mile course set up in the back of our school where students can walk/jog during recess. This activity is completely optional for the students 2-5th grade. If interested, a student gets a Mileage Card. Each card has 20 markings “feet” on the card, (each foot represents ¼ mile,) an area for the students name and teacher. The cards are kept in an index file box, next to the recess doors. Some teachers keep their class cards with them on a ring binder to save time. Each time a student completes a ¼ mile their teacher initials a foot on the card. A completed card is 5 miles. Once they complete 5 miles they receive a foot charm, and their name goes up with their class grade on the bulletin board. Each additional 5 miles they receive another charm and another foot on the bulletin board. I originally began this for 3-5, but I have had more 2nd graders participate than I ever imagined. They love the charms, and the teachers like the fact that the kids are staying busy during recess. This is a great way to incorporate daily fitness for life, and the students don’t even realize it! To construct the “bulletin board” I made a sign “Step Up to the Mileage Club” and had it laminated. This is not an actual bulletin board; there is only a stapling strip where I have stapled each class ribbon and title. I then took long sheets of white bulletin board paper, shaped the bottom like a ribbon, labeled them 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th and hung them by class. I cut out a “foot” shape pattern and then cut approximately 100 feet in various colors. Each time a student completes 5 miles, they get a foot with their name on it. I used double sided tape for this. If they get more miles I just add a foot to their name. They also receive a foot charm each 5 miles. The chart is updated weekly, and will run through the whole school year. Students love seeing their accomplishments.
