Description:
When asked to create a bulletin board for my new school where I would be teaching, I decided to create it on a topic which would be applicable all the way through my internship.....student behavior. The title of my bulletin board is "Building Up or Breaking Down." My message is to promote positive behaviors between the students and to focus on having them encourage each other, with words and actions, rather than tear each other down. This is complemented by a brick-layered background which goes hand-in-hand with my title and theme. I used a "Bully-Free Zone" boarder because bullying will not be tolerated. I added cartoon pictures of feelings associated with both encouraging each other and tearing each other down. Throughout the board I posted photos of positive behaviors, each with a small caption (ex. students paddling in a kayak with the phrase "Working Together" & one student helping a wheel-chair bound student with the words "Caring" & “Helping”). Toward the center of the board I placed a behavior chart to keep track and reward student's positive behavior toward each other. Next to that, which I am most looking forward to, I placed the words "Conflict Manager" with labeled envelopes for 3rd, 4th & 5th grade. When there is a conflict between students, I randomly choose a name from that grade/class envelope and that student will be the conflict manager and will help solve the problem between his/her fellow students (with guidance and assistance from the teacher). This is a great chance for responsible role-playing for the students.Used both in the gym and in the hallway by the counselor's office.
