Description:
This board was created during our Cardiovascular System Unit, which focus on the parts of the heart, the blood flow pattern and how the heart pumps. Students were taught that the "Lub Dub" sound that comes from the heart, is the atrium and ventricles pumping both the oxygenated and de-oxygenated blood to the body and the lungs. As a part of this unit, students learned how to find their pulse, count their heart beats for 6 seconds, and then multiply the amount of beats by 10 to get their heart rate. They also learned what their target heart rate zone is, and how that number changes for every year you grow older. To begin class, we have everyone find their resting heart rate on the pulse sticks. Throughout our cardiovascular activities, students are asked to find their heart rate manually. Class then would come to a close with students finding their heart rate on the pulse sticks. Stopping an activity to allow the students to find their heart rate, reinforced how important it is to exercise in the target rate zone. After checking their heart rate, many students could be found running a little faster, in order to get their heart rate up to the appropriate number.
