Title of Bulletin Board: What Is Your Skin Telling You

Description:

Titled “What is Your Skin Telling You?”, the bulletin board uses a bright orange border, background, and section headings, sunny yellow text boxes, a large 3D decorative sun from a teacher’s supply store and graphics collected from Microsoft Clip-art and Bing images to educate the reader on early detection, warning signs and prevention of skin cancer. Using copy gathered from a skin health pamphlet from a local dermatologist I displayed the information into five sections.

First Column “Did You Know”: Gives three interesting facts about the skin and skin cancer to draw the 8th grade readers’ interest:

1. Skin is the largest organ of your body
2. Skin Cancer is the most easily detectable, curable, and preventable form of cancer
3. Skin Cancer strikes over 800,000 people a year in America

Second Column “How To Examine Your Skin”: Focuses on the importance of plotting your moles by asking the question “How many moles do you have?”. It invites the reader to count their moles and offers useful information to successfully locate and plot a skin map. Images display a young man examining his front and back in a mirror along with images of a hand and feet to remind the reader to not forget these key areas while counting their moles.

To the bottom right of the second column I’ve added a bubble with the sentence “My Mole Total Is ______.” to complete the skin mapping process and engage the viewer.
Third Column “Risk Factors & Prevention”: Three Risk Factors are listed first (Repeated or prolonged exposure to sun; A bad sunburn in childhood, teens, or twenties; Fair skin, light eyes and hair). Five Prevention options are also listed (Stay out of the sun from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Cover up with hat, shirt, and pants; Use a sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 15 or higher; Tan gradually; Don’t use sunlamps or tanning centers).
Fourth Column “Health Resources”: The bright yellow 3D sun made out of paper and tissue is located at the top of the last column. Below the sun is a graphic of a lady sitting on the beach in a sun hat.

A list of six health resources the reader can contact with questions about prevention, risk factors, or diagnosis is located at the bottom right corner to complete the bulletin board.
