Description:
Cyber bullying, a form of harassment that occurs through the use of technology, has become a prevalent activity for middle school students. To raise awareness of the issue, this bulletin board was constructed to educate students on the definition of Cyber bullying, give statistics about Cyber bullying, and offer the contact information to utilize resources for help.
Clip art images were used to represent the tools or programs students most often use to Cyber bully others. Information is organized into three columns across the bulletin board. The first column lists four facts about Cyber bullying, including (1) being ignored or disrespected is the most common form of Cyber bullying, (2) girls are twice as likely as boys to be the victims and perpetrators of Cyber bullying, (3) 9 out of 10 middle school students have had their feelings hurt over the internet or text messaging, and (4) 52% of students report seeing bullying at least once a week.
The middle column of information gives the definition of Cyber bullying. This information drives home a main point that majority of Cyber bullying occurs through the use of a computer.
The third column offers information about where to find help if you witness an act of Cyber bullying or are a victim of it. It says that there is a Cyber bullying report drop-box in Ms. Felton’s Room and gives the room number so that any student can report any acts of Cyber bullying. This column says, “Be Responsible for your behavior.” An arrow points from this text box to another text box that states, “Don’t make threats or even ‘jokes’ online because adults may not be able to tell whether it’s real or not. There are CRIMINAL LAWS against making threats. You can be suspended, expelled, or even arrested for participating in acts of Cyber bullying.” The last section of information contains a "Commitment to End Cyber Bullying Contract" that the students of Ms. Felton’s class have signed stating, “I promise not to participate in Cyber bullying in any fashion. This includes respecting people’s privacy, treating others with respect over the internet and through cell phone interaction, not making threats, and reporting all cases of Cyber bullying. I understand that this is a serious issue with serious emotional side effects and that perpetrators of Cyber bullying will have to face the consequences. By signing this commitment, I promise to be CyberSafe.” This signed contract was included in the bulletin board so fellow students can see who is committed not to be a Cyber bully.
