PEC: Bulletin Boards for Physical Education

Title of Bulletin Board: Remember to Warm-Up and Cool Down

Category: Fitness

Suggested Grade Level: K-8

Materials: Colored paper, Clip Art Images, Speech Bubbles

Description:

This bulletin board was created for the purpose to educate K-2 on the benefits of a proper warm-up and cool down when exercising. Using NASPE standard 2, the student demonstrates an understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities. Specifically, explain the importance of a warm up and cool down. “When You Exercise Remember to Warm Up and Cool Down” is the title of the bulletin board displayed at Holly Tree Elementary. Using the Internet to find some common benefits for warm up and cool down, (http://EzineArticles), I constructed a two-part display complete with age appropriate content and graphics to draw the attention of the intended audience of 1st graders.
Using Adobe Photoshop, I combined several Internet and Clipart images to create the main character of the display, a physically active heart. The Heart is depicted as exercising and speaks to the viewer on the benefits of warm up and cool down. Choosing a heart as the main character adds emphasis to how important the heart muscle is during exercise. The Heart talks through speech bubbles/call-outs about three benefits to both warm up and cool down. The Warm Up section is displayed with bright warm colors such as yellow, orange and red. The first warm up benefit, …helps your muscles get ready for exercise, is represented by The Heart in his headband and sneakers ready for physical activity. The second benefit,…helps make your heart stronger and ready for activity, is demonstrated by The Heart flexing his strong biceps. The last benefit, …helps reduce the risk of injury, shows The Heart with a “No Band-Aid” symbol over his strong bicep indicating The Heart won’t have any “boo-boos” if he warms up. The Cool Down portion is displayed with a cool blue palette. The Heart begins his cool down benefits with a bottle of water and towel in hand saying “Cool down helps bring your heart rate back to normal.” The Heart is having a great time stretching with a bottle of water in the second cool down benefit, …helps improve your flexibility. Finally The Heart shows off his happy arm muscles with the third cool down benefit, …helps your muscles feel less sore.
