Teacher: Nancy Hennefer who teaches at Creekside ES in Stockton, CA. Nancy Hennefer can be contacted at umbibs@aol.com.
Name of Best Practice: Family Night Campout
Rationale/Purpose of Event: To expose students and parents to local parks by providing an evening filled with games, songs, and informative talks.
Suggested Grade Level: K-8
Materials Needed: Welcome letter for parents and students which describes the agenda for the evening, if possible a park ranger to present a campfire presentation, an individual (perhaps the music teacher) who can lead the group in campfire songs, and whatever equipment needed that would correspond with ones specific choice of activities offered.
Usually held on a Friday night in late August or early September, the evening begins with a BYOD (Bring Your Own Dinner)! Dinner is then followed by activities such as Frisbee golf, parachute games, or cooperative/team building games. If possible, select activities that relate in some way to the park. For example, nature hikes and nature scanvenger hunts are always a big hit! The evening concludes with everyone gathering at the outdoor amphitheater to participate in a campfire presentation, singalong, and of course the eatting of so'mores!
