Name of Best Practice: Elementary School Health & Wellness Fair
Rationale/Purpose of Event: To provide an opportunity for High School students to educate elementary students about health, nutrition, and wellness.
Suggested Grade Level: K-5
Materials Needed: Various.
This event has High School students plan, organize, and implement a Health & Wellness Fair at an area elementary school during the first week in May each year (7th year in 2000). Teams of students go into the classroom for formal presentations that they have created on nutrition, back care, bike and pedestrian safety. Other students create a challenging obstacle course as well as an interactive dance presentation. Other students prepare a healthy snack, talk with students about tobacco and drug resistance and join numerous other health professional with presentations (the town ambulance, youth sports groups, YMCA, the police department, and a local physician). It is a fun and educational event for all involved.
Community Service Students in the High School Health Education program begin preparing in October (writing grants, organizing, and scheduling). Preparations continue intermittently throughout the year designing and creating presentations, handouts, and posters for the event. It is an all day event where over 20 High School Students arrive at 6 AM and transform the elementary school with balloons, streamers, and all sorts of thematic posters and props including an 8' tall food pyramid built by the students.
